Van M. Porter, 79, passed away March 5, 2022, in San Bernardino California. Van was born on March 27, 1942, in Wilks County, NC. Van was the youngest son of Dewey L. Porter and Vesta Southern Porter. Van attended Mountain View High School in North Carolina through the 10th grade before moving to Azusa, CA where he graduated from Azusa High School with honors in 1960. Van spent two years attending Citrus College before being drafted in the United States Army in 1962. Van spent his Army years in Georgia and Texas. Upon completing his service in the Army, Van graduated from East Los Angeles College with a master’s degree in education in 1974. Van was an elementary school teacher for the better part of his 30-year teaching career before retiring in 2003.
Van loved to travel the world and he shared his passion to travel with friends and family through epic stories. Van had visited every state in the United States multiple times. He ventured throughout the world, visiting every continent. His travel adventures took him on a motorcycle journey from Alaska to South America to Florida and back to California.
Van is survived by his Son Clifford and his wife Jennifer of San Bernardino, CA, and their three kids, Brandon of Orlando, FL, Brooke of Santa Barbara, CA, and Brianne of Austin, TX, his son Michael and his fiancé Camei of Rialto, CA, and his daughter Maria and her husband Richard of Redlands, CA. Van is also survived by his four sisters and two brothers. Lillie Emmert of Riverside, CA., Doris Cullins of San Diego, CA., Betty Cleary of North Wilkesboro, NC, and Arlene Handy of McGrady, NC. Brother George of McGrady, NC, and Brother McCoy of Waterville, ME.
